my story and focus

Welcome. I am Sean Mitchell, and for 10 years, I have worked closely with churches to develop annual and capital campaigns, major gifts, and planned giving.  I have written over 200,000 words on the topic of Christian financial stewardship through authoring blogs, a book, and many published articles. While I have taken many steps and journeyed many miles with church communities, in some ways it feels like the journey is only just beginning.  The average professing Christian is only giving 3% of their income away.  The church universal has unrealized giving potential.   Like I said, there is a journey to take.  The way ahead looks bright.  The work will be rewarding.  I want to live more generously and partner/strengthen church communities that desire the same outcome.  Here are some more interesting points about me. I am a:

  • seminary graduate
  • husband
  • father
  • gardener
  • chronic reader
  • writer
  • stewardship director for a Presbyterian Church community
  • consultant
  • speaker

equipping leaders

I speak in a variety of venues including conferences, organizational retreats, church leadership meetings, and academic classrooms. When I present to you and others, you will hear three types of information: Relatable stories of generosity development, practical ways for you to structure new ministry models in your own faith community, and immediate, achievable goals you can begin working towards.  The point of my content is to help you think and lead. If you and others are ready for this learning experience, take a moment to review my speaking portfolio.

Five Causes of Generosity
What are the causes?  From my experience, research, and collaboration with fundraisers and pastors, I will share what I believe to be the core catalysts for giving, and more importantly, how to create cultures where people develop the practice of giving.

Developing the Next Generation of Givers
Learn to apply leadership and fundraising best practices to inspire generosity in Gen X and Millennials.

Generosity from Scratch
This content teaches seminarians, beginning pastors, and/or pastors of church plants ways to lead and launch financial stewardship ministries in faith communities.

Discernment Practices for Giving
In my journey, I have met many church goers who are struggling to determine what God is calling them to financially give to their church.  This presentation presents ways for leaders to learn and teach others steps to being more purposeful at generosity.

The Vocation of Generosity Development
Fundraising and stewardship ministry development is fruitful, yet challenging work.  I will share my journey, and the values keeping many in this vocation focused and encouraged in doing some of the most impactful work in the world.

Revitalizing the Annual Stewardship Campaign
Are you hearing fall stewardship campaigns are becoming extinct?  What’s next?  Before you distance your congregation from this ancient process for developing financial commitments, you might consider staying the course with the campaign model for at least another year or two.  I will discuss the spirituality of campaigns and how to build the next, inspiring campaign.

A 12 Month Stewardship Ministry Guide for Pastors
How often should pastors preach on stewardship/giving throughout the year?  In addition, what are some other ways through which they can provide pastoral leadership to develop stewards in their congregation?  In this presentation, Sean will provide counsel for pastors seeking a personal, yearly plan for a deepened involvement in stewardship ministry.

Launch: How Church Leadership can Create a 12-Month Stewardship Ministry
What can church stewardship leaders/teams do in January or June to develop stewards?  When is the best time to thank givers for giving?  How often should members be asked to give?  This presentation provides a guide for developing a January-December stewardship ministry.

growing givers

Generosity development is what I do.  This is the field where I have invested my time and resources.  I have helped leaders, stewardship professionals, and financial development teams plant and grow generosity campaigns and other initiatives.  These resources are available to you and to your organization as well.

I want to provide you the most custom consulting process for your church, so I have created 6 tracks from which you can choose:

1. Leadership/Annual Campaign Development

From my experience working with many church leadership teams, I can work with your next stewardship ministry leader and help him/her build a ministry team and design an impactful and community-building annual stewardship campaign.

2. Create a 12-Month Stewardship Ministry

For churches wanting to rebuild their aged stewardship ministry models, or for younger churches wanting to launch a year-round ministry, I can work with you to strategically plan a calendar of leadership meetings, tasks, appeals for commitments, and communications.

3. Stewardship Director Assimilation

Churches with the budget capacity are beginning to hire full-time and part-time stewardship directors to help advance their stewardship ministry initiatives.  I can help you build a tailored job description for your faith community and help guide the director in their first month in the position.

4. Pastoral Leadership Development

Are pastors, as some claim, supposed to be the chief fundraisers of their churches?  Are they supposed to know how much everyone gives? How often should pastors preach on stewardship and generosity?  I can help you be true to your calling, and to go deeper in your involvement in developing stewards and generous people.  We will work on preaching and teaching strategies, as well as other steps for leading your to a deeper understanding of the grace of giving.

5. Major Gifts/Capital Campaign Organizational Development

From Sean’s experience leading churches through major funding initiatives, he will provide counsel on strategic planning, fundraising, campaign calendar development, communications, and pastoral leadership.

6. Legacy/Planned Giving Development

How many of your church members have included the church in their estate plans?  Does your church teach legacy giving as a spiritual practice?  This track will help church leaders develop a plan for educating members on the spirituality of planned giving and make asks for these gifts.
